What is FSSAI Registration and Why is it Important?

In the dynamic landscape of the food industry, ensuring the safety and quality of food products is paramount. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) plays a pivotal role in this regard by regulating and controlling the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food products and ensures availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption . One of the key initiatives introduced by FSSAI is the FSSAI registration, which serves as a crucial step for food businesses across India.

What is FSSAI Registration?

FSSAI registration is a mandatory compliance requirement for individuals or entities engaged in the food business in India. The primary objective of this registration is to ensure that food products meet the safety standards specified by FSSAI. Whether you are a small-scale food vendor, a restaurant owner, or a large-scale food manufacturer, obtaining FSSAI registration is a legal obligation that reinforces the commitment to food safety and consumer well-being.

Why is FSSAI Registration Important?

  1. Legal Compliance:

FSSAI registration is a legal mandate for all food businesses operating in India. It provides a legal framework for the food industry, ensuring that businesses adhere to the standards set by FSSAI. Failure to obtain FSSAI registration can result in penalties, fines, and even the closure of the business, highlighting the importance of compliance.

  1. Consumer Confidence:

Consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of the quality and safety of the food they consume. FSSAI registration adds a layer of credibility to a food business, assuring consumers that the products they purchase meet the established safety standards. This trust is essential for building long-term relationships with customers and fostering a positive reputation in the market.

  1. Quality Assurance:

FSSAI registration involves a comprehensive assessment of the food business’s infrastructure, processing methods, and adherence to hygiene and safety standards. This process ensures that the food products meet the necessary quality benchmarks, promoting overall food safety and reducing the risk of contamination or adulteration.

How to Register for FSSAI in India

The process of obtaining FSSAI registration in India is streamlined and can be accomplished through the following steps:

  1. Determine the Type of Registration/License:

FSSAI registration is mandatory for small-scale Food Business Operators (FBOs) with a turnover of less than Rs. 12 lakhs, unless falling under compulsory licensing.

Petty FBOs involved in the production or sale of food items, such as hawkers, petty retailers, itinerant vendors, temporary stall-holders, or small-scale food industry enterprises, must obtain an FSSAI registration certificate if they meet the following conditions:

  1. Annual turnover is less than Rs. 12 lakhs.
  2. Production capacity of food products (excluding milk, meat, and meat products) is up to 100 liters or kg per day.
  3. Procurement, handling, and collection of milk are limited to 500 liters daily.
  4. Slaughtering capacity is ten small animals, two large animals, or 50 poultry birds per day or less.
  5. Engages in food distribution at religious or social gatherings, except as a caterer.

FSSAI License is a mandatory requirement for enterprises with a turnover exceeding Rs. 12 lakhs and for FBOs involved in food processing and manufacturing. This license is categorized into two types: Central and State. The FSSAI license is denoted by a 14-digit code, with the initial digit 1. The type of license—State or Central—depends on the business scale.

State License:

Medium-scale processors, manufacturers, traders, marketers, or transporters fall under the purview of the FSSAI state license, granted by the respective state government. FBOs with an annual turnover surpassing Rs. 12 lakhs but not exceeding Rs. 20 crores are classified as medium-sized FBOs and are required to secure a state license.

Central License:

1.Large-scale enterprises engaged in food processing, transportation, manufacturing, and international trade of food products are mandated to obtain the FSSAI central license. An FBO is categorized as a large business if its annual turnover surpasses Rs. 20 crores necessitating the acquisition of the FSSAI central license from the Central Government.

  1. Complete the Application Form:

Once the registration type is identified, fill out the FSSAI application form available on the official FSSAI website. Provide accurate and detailed information about the business, its operations, and the types of food products involved.

  1. Submit Required Documents:

Attach the necessary documents, such as identity proof, address proof, and details of the food products to be manufactured or sold. The documentation requirements vay based on the type of registration sought.

  1. Payment of Fees:

Pay the applicable registration fees online through the FSSAI portal. The fee structure is determined by the type of registration and the duration for which it is sought.

  1. Application Review:

Once the application and documents are submitted, the FSSAI authorities will review the information and  issue the certificate.

Benefits of Having FSSAI Registration

  1. Market Access:

FSSAI registration opens doors to a wider market by allowing businesses to operate across different states and regions. This facilitates expansion and growth opportunities for food businesses, enabling them to reach a larger consumer base.

  1. Consumer Trust and Confidence:

Having an FSSAI registration instills confidence in consumers, as it assures them that the food products they are purchasing meet the established safety and quality standards. This trust can lead to increased customer loyalty and positive word-of-mouth recommendations.

  1. Legal Compliance:

FSSAI registration ensures that a food business complies with the regulatory framework, reducing the risk of legal consequences. This not only safeguards the business but also contributes to the overall integrity of the food industry.

  1. Improved Business Reputation:

A visible FSSAI registration certificate enhances the reputation of a food business. It signals a commitment to food safety and quality, which can be a differentiating factor in a competitive market.

FSSAI registration is not just a legal requirement; it is a crucial step towards building a sustainable and reputable food business in India. By prioritizing food safety and quality through FSSAI registration, businesses can gain a competitive edge, foster consumer trust, and contribute to the overall well-being of the food industry. As the food landscape evolves, FSSAI registration remains a steadfast commitment to ensuring that every consumer enjoys safe and quality food products.
